We design buildings that belong where they stand.

Hollin House: a long, low concrete and charred-timber house set into a hillside at golden hour

The practice

Every project starts on site, at different hours and in different weather. We listen to the land, to the people who will live with the building, and to the materials already there. Then we draw as little as possible, as carefully as we can.

How we work

Three habits we have kept since the first house, whatever the size of the brief.

  1. I

    Listen

Two days on site before a line is drawn: morning, evening, rain if we can get it. Then long conversations with the people who will live with the building.

  2. II

    Draw less

One clear idea, carried through every scale. We model by hand first and keep the material palette short enough to remember.

  3. III

    Build well

We stay on site through construction, work with local makers and design details to weather well, so the building gets better with age.

They spent two days on the hill before they drew a single line. Four years on, the house feels as if it was always there.
